正常情况下可根据管道维护温度和意外高温运行温度选择发热电缆的温度和发热等级。根据管道可承受的温度选择相应的电热带型号。常用的有: 水箱、管道等一般远离防爆区，不太集中受热的伴热体，温度控制要求不高，只要水温始终保持在一定范围内即可满足设计要求。可使用自限电热带，可自动控制温度，节省配电箱、温度控制器等电加热配件。在阀门弯头较多的区域，也可以实现交叉重叠安装。使用者在选择电热带时，还需要确认当场承受的能量，然后根据能量选择相应的电热带。他也可以选择恒功率电热带，因为它的功率是恒定的，不会随着环境和外界的变化而改变，它的功率总是恒定的，不会出现开始时功率过高的现象。
此外，还要考虑加热距离、保温要求是否防腐、是否用于防爆场合等。用户在选择电伴热带时可提供现场参数，使电伴热带的电气性能达到好的效果。
